South Africa vs Australia: Proteas Dominate Day 1 in Durban
Proteas Put Australia Under Pressure as Nortje Shines on Day One of Durban Test
DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA — 9 October 2026
South Africa's fast bowlers delivered a strong performance on the opening day of the first Test against Australia at Kingsmead in Durban, restricting the visitors to 187 for six before bad light brought play to an early close.
Wiaan Mulder, Marco Jansen and Anrich Nortje claimed two wickets each as the Proteas put Australia's batting lineup under sustained pressure.
Australia Struggle After Winning the Toss
Australian captain Pat Cummins won the toss and elected to bat first, but the visitors struggled to establish a strong opening partnership.
Nic Maddinson endured a difficult return to Test cricket, departing without scoring after facing 33 deliveries.
Travis Head also fell early, leaving Australia searching for stability.
Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne attempted to rebuild the innings with a 60-run partnership.
However, Labuschagne was dismissed for 37 by Mulder just before lunch, while Smith later departed for 25.
Anrich Nortje Makes an Impressive Return
South African fast bowler Anrich Nortje made an important contribution on his return to Test cricket.
Nortje dismissed Alex Carey and Beau Webster, strengthening South Africa's position during the afternoon session.
His performance was particularly significant because South Africa entered the match without experienced fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, who was unavailable while recovering from a hamstring injury.
Marco Jansen and Wiaan Mulder also played crucial roles in restricting Australia's scoring opportunities.
Renshaw and Cummins Lead Australia's Recovery
Despite losing six wickets, Australia showed resistance through Matt Renshaw and captain Pat Cummins.
Renshaw remained unbeaten on 46, while Cummins finished the day on 33 not out.
Their partnership helped Australia reach 187 for six before deteriorating light ended proceedings after 65.2 overs.
South Africa Aim to Finish the Job on Day Two
The Proteas will look to dismiss Australia's remaining batters quickly when play resumes on Saturday, 10 October.
Australia, meanwhile, will hope Renshaw and Cummins can extend their partnership and build a more competitive first-innings total.
The opening Test is part of a three-match series between the two cricketing nations.
The second Test is scheduled for Gqeberha from 18 October, followed by the final Test in Cape Town from 27 October.
With both teams competing in the ICC World Test Championship, the series represents an important opportunity to strengthen their positions in international Test cricket.
SA360 NEWS will continue covering the series with match reports, scores and key developments.
