Second Suspect Arrested in Murder of EFF’s Monica Dube as Political Killings Probe Advances

South African police have arrested a second suspect in connection with the murder of Economic Freedom Fighters member Monica Dube, marking a significant development in the investigation into her killing.

The 39-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday evening by the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team following what police described as an intelligence-driven investigation.

Investigators say they were able to positively link the suspect to Dube's murder. He is expected to appear before the Cullinan Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, where he will face a murder charge.

Dube was killed at her home

Dube, 44, was shot and killed at her home in Wallmansthal, north of Pretoria, on 13 June 2026.

She was an EFF member and had served as the party's Tshwane Region 2 secretary. According to authorities, members of her family were present when she was killed.

The case attracted political attention and became part of the work being handled by the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team.

Second arrest in the investigation

The latest arrest follows the detention of Sipho Lucky Mahlangu, who was arrested in July.

Mahlangu has already appeared in the Cullinan Magistrate's Court several times and remains in custody after abandoning his bail application. He faces charges including murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Police have not publicly disclosed all the evidence allegedly linking the newly arrested 39-year-old suspect to the killing, and the allegations against him will still have to be tested in court.

EFF welcomes progress

The EFF has welcomed the second arrest, saying investigators should continue pursuing everyone who may have participated in or facilitated Dube's killing.

The development could now place renewed attention on the circumstances surrounding the murder and whether investigators believe other people were involved.

For police, the second arrest represents another step forward in a case that has remained under investigation since Dube's death in June
