SARS Tax Deadline Approaches: What South Africans Need to Know Before 23 October

South Africans who still need to submit their 2026 income tax returns are being urged to take note of an important SARS deadline approaching later this month.

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has confirmed that 23 October 2026 is the filing deadline for non-provisional individual taxpayers who were not auto-assessed.

Who needs to file by 23 October?

The deadline primarily applies to non-provisional individual taxpayers who need to submit an income tax return.

According to SARS, a non-provisional taxpayer is typically someone earning a regular salary or wage from an employer, with PAYE already deducted, and who generally has relatively straightforward tax affairs.

The filing period for these taxpayers opened on 13 July 2026 and closes on 23 October 2026.

SARS has advised taxpayers not to leave their submissions until the last minute and recommends preparing supporting documents and filing accurately and on time

What about provisional taxpayers?

Not everyone faces the October deadline.

Provisional taxpayers have until 22 January 2027 to submit their returns. This category can include people earning income from sources such as businesses, freelance work, investments or rental income in addition to, or instead of, a regular salary.

Trusts also have until 22 January 2027, with their filing season running from 19 September 2026.

What if you received an auto-assessment?

SARS issued auto-assessment notices between 1 and 12 July 2026.

Taxpayers who received an auto-assessment and agree with the result generally do not need to take further action. Those who disagree with the assessment can correct and submit their return within the applicable filing period.

One change this year is that certain eligible provisional taxpayers may also receive auto-assessments.

SARS introduces changes for the 2026 filing season

SARS has introduced several improvements to make filing easier.

Some information, including certain investment income, may already be pre-filled. SARS has also simplified questions on tax returns, introduced clearer residency questions and improved medical-aid selection.

The ITR12 filing experience has also been updated, while taxpayers can access certain SARS services through WhatsApp, including receiving assessment documents and uploading supporting documents

SARS extends Saturday assistance

With the deadline approaching, selected SARS service centres are also opening on Saturdays to assist taxpayers with their income tax returns.

Taxpayers can alternatively use SARS eFiling or the SARS MobiApp to submit their returns digitally.

Beware of tax scams

Taxpayers should also be cautious about fraudulent messages during filing season.

SARS says it will never ask taxpayers to provide passwords, OTPs, banking PINs or eFiling login credentials through email, SMS, social media or telephone. Taxpayers who are uncertain about a message should verify it through official SARS channels.

With 23 October 2026 approaching, taxpayers who fall under the non-provisional category should check their filing status and submit any outstanding returns before the deadline.
