Ramaphosa Launches FuturePharma Facility as South Africa Pushes to Produce More Medicines Locally
President Cyril Ramaphosa has launched the CSIR FuturePharma facility in Pretoria, marking a major step in South Africa's drive to strengthen domestic pharmaceutical manufacturing and reduce its dependence on imported medicines.
The facility was officially launched on Wednesday at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research campus, with government, science and industry representatives attending the event.
FuturePharma is designed as an open-access pharmaceutical innovation and manufacturing facility that will help researchers and companies move promising technologies from laboratory research towards larger-scale production and commercialisation.
Building medicines in South Africa
A key focus of FuturePharma is the development and production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) — the components in medicines responsible for their therapeutic effects.
South Africa currently relies heavily on imported pharmaceutical products and ingredients. Government says expanding domestic capabilities could improve security of supply while strengthening the country's pharmaceutical value chain.
The facility will provide researchers, innovators and industry partners with specialised infrastructure and expertise needed to develop pharmaceutical technologies, while also supporting technology transfer and skills development.
Ramaphosa calls it a step towards health sovereignty
Speaking at the launch, Ramaphosa described FuturePharma as a milestone in South Africa's journey towards greater health sovereignty.
The broader goal is to build local capabilities that allow South Africa to develop and manufacture more critical medicines instead of remaining highly dependent on international supply chains.
That capability could become particularly important during global health emergencies, when international supply chains can come under severe pressure.
Government says FuturePharma will contribute to the country's preparedness for future pandemics and other health emergencies by strengthening domestic pharmaceutical capacity.
Connecting research with commercial production
Another important objective is closing the gap between scientific research and commercial manufacturing.
South African universities and research institutions may develop promising pharmaceutical technologies, but converting laboratory discoveries into products manufactured at scale requires specialised equipment, expertise and investment.
FuturePharma is intended to provide some of that missing infrastructure, allowing researchers and industry partners to develop, scale and commercialise pharmaceutical technologies.
The launch represents part of a broader effort to build South Africa's pharmaceutical industry, create specialised skills and improve the country's ability to respond to future healthcare needs.
For the government, the long-term objective goes beyond producing individual medicines: it is about developing a stronger domestic pharmaceutical ecosystem capable of turning South African scientific research into locally manufactured products.
