Pilani Bubu Releases Caged Heart After 15 Years in Music
JOHANNESBURG, 9 October 2026 — Award-winning South African singer-songwriter Pilani Bubu is celebrating 15 years of creative independence with the release of her introspective single, Caged Heart, a song rooted in a poem she wrote more than a decade ago.
In an interview published by the Mail & Guardian on Friday, Bubu reflected on her musical journey, the challenges of remaining an independent artist and her commitment to telling African stories.
A Song That Took 12 Years to Find Its Voice
Caged Heart originated as a poem written in 2014, during a period when Bubu was questioning her professional direction.
Having left a corporate career to pursue music, she found herself reconsidering the compromises involved in returning to conventional employment.
The poem eventually evolved into a song, undergoing several creative changes and recording attempts before reaching its final form.
Bubu explained that the passing years allowed her to approach the lyrics with greater confidence and emotional maturity.
Fifteen Years of Musical Independence
Throughout her career, Bubu has worked as a songwriter, composer, publisher and performer while maintaining control over her creative projects.
Her music combines influences from Afro-folk, soul, jazz and R&B, often incorporating poetry and traditional storytelling.
According to the Mail & Guardian, she has released seven albums, performed in more than 25 countries and earned recognition at the South African Music Awards.
Her album Folklore Chapter 1 received the award for Best African Adult Contemporary Album at the 2020 SAMAs.
An Eighth Album Is on the Way
Caged Heart forms part of Bubu's next musical chapter.
The singer is preparing an eighth album, expected around the middle of 2027.
Rather than releasing all the material at once, she plans to introduce songs gradually, allowing listeners to engage with the stories behind each track.
The upcoming project explores personal identity, creative freedom and the expectations that can limit artistic expression.
Building Opportunities Through the Folklore Festival
Beyond recording and performing, Bubu founded the Folklore Festival, an initiative designed to promote African storytelling and connect artists with audiences.
The festival has developed to include performances, workshops, industry discussions and professional networking opportunities.
It also supports artists through related initiatives, including the Folklorish booking agency.
Bubu hopes to establish the festival as a major platform for cultural preservation and creative collaboration across Africa.
International Recognition for South African Music
Bubu's career has taken her to stages across Europe and Africa, demonstrating the international appeal of South African creative talent.
Her experience also highlights the opportunities and challenges facing independent musicians.
While artistic independence allows greater creative control, it can require artists to manage financing, promotion and business development without the resources of major record labels.
What's Next for Pilani Bubu?
Bubu is expected to appear at the ACCESS music showcase and conference in Johannesburg on 31 October.
Meanwhile, preparations for her next album and the continued development of the Folklore Festival remain important parts of her plans.
Her latest release marks another milestone in a career built around artistic independence, collaboration and African storytelling.
