Msaki, Elaine and Soweto Gospel Choir to Headline Major Johannesburg Art and Lifestyle Fair
South African music stars Msaki and Elaine will join the award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir for a major celebration of African art, music, fashion and culture in Johannesburg this weekend.
The artists form the headline entertainment lineup for the third edition of the Absa L’Atelier Art and Lifestyle Fair, which takes place on Saturday, 10 October 2026, at Waterfall City Park at the Mall of Africa in Midrand.
This year's event carries additional significance as it celebrates 40 years of the Absa L’Atelier Art Awards, an initiative created to support and develop emerging visual artists from across Africa.
Msaki leads a major South African lineup
Singer-songwriter Msaki will headline the event, bringing together two sides of her creative career.
While she is widely recognised for her music, Msaki also has a background in visual art, making her particularly suited to an event combining live performance with exhibitions and other creative disciplines.
She will be joined by R&B singer Elaine, whose breakthrough project Elements helped establish her as one of South Africa's prominent contemporary R&B artists.
The Soweto Gospel Choir will also perform. The internationally recognised ensemble has won three Grammy Awards and has taken South African gospel music to audiences around the world.
12 African artists compete for major opportunity
Music, however, is only one part of the programme.
Work from 12 finalists in the 2026 Absa L’Atelier competition will be showcased during the fair, with four winners set to be announced.
The winners will become Absa L’Atelier Ambassadors and receive opportunities including masterclasses, four months of mentorship and a two-month art residency in South Africa in 2027. They will also have an opportunity to stage a solo exhibition within two years.
More than 50 artists have previously become ambassadors through the programme.
Art meets music, fashion and lifestyle
Rather than presenting visual art exclusively within a traditional gallery environment, the fair combines exhibitions with live music, fashion and lifestyle experiences.
This approach is designed to introduce contemporary African art to a broader audience while creating a platform where different parts of South Africa's creative industry can interact.
For Johannesburg audiences, Saturday's event will therefore offer more than a concert: it will bring some of the country's recognised musical performers together with a new generation of African visual artists
