Four Arrested After Police Uncover Suspected Multimillion-Rand Mandrax Lab Near Hartbeespoort Dam

Four people have been arrested after police uncovered what they believe to be a multimillion-rand drug manufacturing laboratory at a property near Hartbeespoort Dam in North West.

The intelligence-driven operation took place on Tuesday at a plot in Scheerpoort after members of Hartbeespoortdam SAPS Crime Prevention received information about suspected illegal activity at the property.

The information was passed to Brits Crime Intelligence and the Hartbeespoortdam K9 Unit for further investigation and verification before officers moved in.

Police discover suspected drug-manufacturing operation

According to North West police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh, officers found three women and one man at the property.

A search allegedly uncovered processed drugs, a mixture believed to be used in drug production and equipment suspected of being used to manufacture narcotics.

Police believe the facility was being used for the illicit manufacture of Mandrax.

Four firearms were also seized during the operation, including one rifle and three handguns.

Four suspects arrested

Police identified those arrested as a 39-year-old Zimbabwean man and three women aged between 23 and 29.

The four face charges relating to possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, as well as dealing in and manufacturing drugs under South Africa's Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act.

They are expected to appear in the Brits Magistrate's Court.

Value of drugs still being determined

Despite the operation being described as involving a multimillion-rand laboratory, authorities were still determining the quantity and estimated value of the drugs seized.

North West Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams praised the officers involved and said police remained committed to disrupting organised crime groups involved in drug manufacturing and distribution.

Investigations are continuing as authorities work to establish the scale of the alleged operation and the value of the substances recovered.
